Assessment Services

Assessment can be a first step into therapy, or a useful piece of work in its own right.

Psychological assessment and formulation

This is often the starting point in therapy. We work together to build a shared, detailed understanding of your emotional, cognitive and behavioural experiences, including how past and present factors may be contributing to current difficulties. A psychological formulation helps make sense of what is going on and guides a personalised plan for support.

Some people come for a one-off assessment without necessarily going on to therapy, and for some that is enough. Others choose to continue. It can also be a useful option for case managers who would like an assessment for a client who may need psychological support.

These assessments are not used to diagnose a mental health condition. Their purpose is to make sense of what is happening and to shape a meaningful approach to care. A written report is available for an additional charge.

Cognitive and neuropsychological assessment

Cognitive assessments build a detailed picture of how the brain is working in areas such as memory, attention, language, processing speed and problem-solving. They can be particularly helpful if you live with a neurological condition, are recovering from a stroke or brain injury, or have noticed changes in thinking and concentration that affect daily life.

They can also inform decisions about returning to work, study or independent living, by showing strengths to build on and where extra support might help. Where there are concerns about possible cognitive impairment or early signs of dementia, they add valuable information to the wider clinical picture, although they do not provide a diagnosis on their own.

Each assessment is tailored to the individual and usually takes place over several sessions: an initial discussion, testing sessions, and a feedback meeting to talk through the results clearly.

Autism assessment

I offer comprehensive autism assessments for adults, using the gold-standard tools ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) and ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview, Revised), in which I am formally trained.

The process includes a detailed developmental history and structured tasks or observations, followed by a clear and supportive discussion of the findings. I take a neuroaffirming approach that values individual strengths and identity.

I can carry out the key components of the assessment, but a formal diagnosis of autism usually needs input from a multidisciplinary team (MDT). I am happy to work jointly with other professionals where this is arranged.

Mental capacity assessment

Mental capacity assessments help determine whether someone can make a specific decision about their life, health, care or finances. They are carried out in line with the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and approached with care, respect and clarity.

I have specialised experience in this area. These assessments are often requested where there are concerns about decision-making because of mental health needs, acquired brain injury, dementia or other neurological conditions.

Depending on the question being asked, an assessment can be completed independently or as part of an MDT. Clear, structured reports are provided to support legal, clinical or case management processes.
