Cognitive and neuropsychological assessment
A detailed picture of how memory, attention, language and thinking are working, and what that means for daily life, work and recovery.
What is a cognitive or neuropsychological assessment?
It is a structured assessment of how the brain is working in areas such as memory, attention, language, processing speed and problem solving. It uses standardised tests alongside a detailed conversation about your history and daily life, so that the results are understood in context.
Who is it for?
It can be especially helpful if you:
- have had a stroke or a brain injury
- live with a neurological condition, or a functional neurological disorder (FND)
- have noticed changes in memory, concentration or thinking that affect everyday life
- are thinking about returning to work, study or more independent living
Referrals from case managers, solicitors, GPs and families are welcome, as well as self-referrals.
What will it tell me?
The assessment shows strengths to build on and areas where extra support could help. It can guide decisions about rehabilitation, return to work or study, and the support a person needs at home. Where there are concerns about possible cognitive impairment or early signs of dementia, it adds valuable information to the wider clinical picture.
On its own, it does not provide a diagnosis. Diagnoses are made by the wider clinical team, using this information alongside other findings.
What happens in the sessions?
Each assessment is tailored to the individual and usually takes place over several sessions:
- an initial discussion about your concerns and history
- one or more testing sessions, with breaks as needed
- a feedback meeting, where we talk through the results clearly, followed by a written report
Please bring any glasses or hearing aids you use, and any previous scans or reports you have. You are welcome to bring someone with you for the first discussion.
How long does it take, and what does it cost?
The number and length of sessions depends on the questions being asked, and we agree this when you enquire. Fees are shared when we speak, with no obligation. Assessments can take place online for some parts, in person in Chiswick, Kensington or West Hampstead, or in your own home through a home visit, where the environment is judged suitable.
