Adult autism assessment
A thorough, neuroaffirming assessment for adults, using the ADOS-2 and ADI-R, with a clear explanation of what the outcome can and cannot be.
Will I get a formal diagnosis?
I can carry out the key components of a comprehensive autism assessment. However, a formal diagnosis of autism usually needs input from a multidisciplinary team (MDT), so the outcome depends on how the assessment is arranged.
Where an MDT is in place, I am happy to work jointly with the other professionals. If you are not sure what kind of outcome you need, for example for workplace adjustments, further NHS care or your own understanding, please ask before booking and I will tell you honestly what this assessment can offer.
What does the assessment involve?
The assessment is in several parts:
- an initial conversation about what you would like to understand and why now
- a detailed developmental history, using the ADI-R interview, covering childhood and how things have been across your life
- structured activities and conversation with the ADOS-2, which looks at communication, social interaction and ways of thinking and playing
- a feedback discussion, where we go through the findings together, followed by a written report
I am formally trained in both the ADOS-2 and the ADI-R, which are widely regarded as gold-standard tools.
What should I bring?
It helps to bring, where you have them:
- school reports, childhood records or old photographs and videos
- any previous assessments or reports
- notes of what you would like to talk about and your questions
- if possible, someone who knew you well as a child, who can add their memories, with your agreement
None of these are essential, and the assessment can still go ahead without them.
What is your approach?
My approach is neuroaffirming. That means I value individual strengths and identity, I treat you as the expert on your own experience, and I adapt the assessment where I can to make it comfortable, for example by discussing sensory needs or breaks beforehand.
What happens afterwards?
You receive a clear written report and a chance to ask questions. We can talk through what the findings mean for you, for support at work or study, and for next steps. If you would like psychological support afterwards, therapy is available, and I can signpost to other services where useful.
How long does it take, and what does it cost?
Timescales depend on how the assessment is arranged and are agreed when you enquire. Fees are shared when we speak, with no obligation. Assessments can take place online, in person in Chiswick, Kensington or West Hampstead, or in your own home through a home visit, where the environment is judged suitable.
